Character Descriptions

The Household of Messina

  • Leonato (M 50s–70s): The Governor and father to Hero; a hospitable but proud patriarch.
  • Hero (F 18–25): Leonato's daughter; gentle, innocent, and the victim of a cruel slander.
  • Beatrice (F 25–40): Leonato’s niece; sharp-tongued, cynical, and fiercely independent.
  • Antonio (M 50s–70s): Leonato’s brother; loyal and quick to defend his family's honor.
  • Margaret (F 20s–30s): Hero's witty waiting-woman; flirtatious and unwittingly involved in the plot.
  • Ursula (F 20s–50s): Hero's other attendant; helps trick Beatrice into falling for Benedick.

The Soldiers & Villains

  • Don Pedro (M 30s–50s): Prince of Aragon; a mature leader who loves a good matchmaking scheme.
  • Benedick (M 25–45): A witty soldier and "confirmed" bachelor who engages in a war of words with Beatrice.

Synopsis

Three men play fictional versions of themselves as they attempt to “capture, in a single, theatrical experience, the magic, the genius, the towering grandeur of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare” playing all characters in several scenes. There is a high level of interaction between the actors and the audience.

Audition Instructions:

Please be prepared to recite a 1-minute Shakespearean comedic monologue and read from one or more of the attached sides.

Please bring your audition form, conflict calendar and a headshot (if available). Forms are linked below.

Character List:

The role of Adam is open. He can be quite emotional and has a bond with audience members. He plays multiple roles in the various short productions of Shakespeare’s works. As was common practice in Shakespeare’s day, males played the female roles. Adam portrays several women in the scenes and has many quick changes throughout the show.

Meet the Directors

Richelle Sutton

Richelle Sutton

Richelle Sutton

Hail and Well met! Richelle is thrilled to be directing Much Ado here at the Fine Arts Center! Since middle school, she’s been involved in countless productions—plays and musicals alike—and theatre has remained a central part of her life. Her passion led her to earn two degrees in the craft: a BA in General Theatre and an MA in Dramaturgy, further deepening her understanding and appreciation for storytelling.

Richelle finds immense joy in anything narrative-related. When she’s not directing, she loves to DM tabletop games, enjoys playing video games, and is often found with her nose in a book.

In true fashion, we are all excited to bring the flavor and panache of Shakespeare to our community this summer. As Shakespeare wrote, "All the world's a stage".

Brian Wood

Richelle Sutton

Richelle Sutton

Brian Wood was born in Mississippi, which means he knows how to pronounce “y’all” correctly. He spent a few years living in England, were he attempted to master a new accent. Eventually, he moved to Utah during high school. Brian attended Weber State University and earned a BA in theatre, thus formalizing his commitment to pretending to be other people.

His acting résumé includes performances in The Play That Goes Wrong (he assures you, it wasn’t his fault), Lend Me a Tenor, The Foreigner, and Angel Street, all at the Heritage Theatre and Terrace Plaza Playhouse.

As a director, Brian has wrangled actors in Plaza Suite, My Three Angels, and Steel Magnolias at the Heritage Theatre. Utilizing the Ziegfeld Theater as the backdrop for a side project, Brian directed and acted in The Prisoner of Second Avenue. Brian previously performed in and is now excited to also direct The Complete Works of Shakespeare Abridged and to team with a new cast who are just as fearless and comfortable with looking and acting ridiculously on stage for the sake of some good laughs.

Upcoming Auditions

Auditions May 14 & 16

Directed by Courtney Fairbourn

Auditions July  7 & 8

Directed by Clint Thornburg
