Director’s Report

Ten years!!  It has been ten years since the Fine Arts Center first open its doors.  A lot has happened in the past ten years and we are grateful for all who have helped us progress to where we are now and for all who have participated in our programs and made the Fine Arts Center such a joyous and fun place to be. We will be celebrating over Peach Days and hope people will take the opportunity to stop in and see where we have been and what we are up to now, ... (and take in for this year’s Melodrama!).

Our summer went well.  We enjoyed a busy and successful time with all of the art camps.  Puppets in the Park, a Nature Camp held at the James V. Hansen Wildlife Education Center, and Photography camps along with our usual art and theater camps were all exciting and fun. We are also very grateful to Nucor Building Systems for volunteering some of their workers over the summer and helping us replace and frame in broken, old windows. This should make a big difference in heating and air conditioning bills! We had several other youth helpers over the summer and especially thank the Box Elder High School Girls Volley Ball team for making us one of their service projects and helping with fall clean up and set painting, etc. They managed two weeks worth of work in one afternoon! 

Speaking of Volunteers, we graciously thank all the volunteer help we have had over the past year. Special thanks to artist Angie Rasmussen Cronin for over 150 hours of donated service in the past 4 months. We also thank our other Fine Arts Center angels- Sarah Yates and the Mitson Family, and donors like Karen Crow.

PEACH DAYS MELODRAMA ON TAP:

Come on out and join us for a traditionally fun time as we cheer the heroes and boo the villains and help the Goldbars protect their bank from a villainous plot. The show:   “The Ballad of Porcupine Joe” or “A Gold Bar in the Hand is Worth Two Gold Bars in The Bush” is written and directed by Geri Garfield, and full of fun surprises. Trevor J White will be providing pre-show entertainment. Show times are Saturday, September 12 at 3, 5, and 7 pm.  Tickets are $5 per person or $20 per family.  Advance sale tickets available.

About the Fine Arts Center:

Our mission is to promote and provide (affordable) fine arts opportunities for youth and families. We offer a variety of programs and classes in music, visual arts, theater and puppetry, and encourage creativity and respect.  If you are interested in seeing other related classes, have a talent you can teach or share, or would like to help plan programming, let us know.  We also have openings on our Board which meets monthly on Tuesday evenings. We are a 501 c(3) nonprofit organization and welcome any and all donations.

ART-TELL 2010

This is an early reminder that the 2010 ART-TELL will be held in February or March  with the theme of  “Up a Tree”  Several  types of visual arts media are acceptable.    

Fall Art Classes
  at the Fine Arts Center

REGISTRATION is now underway. All classes are scheduled to begin the week of September 14.  Classes need a minimum of seven students to run.

Improv Faction : See Ongoing Activities. No fee.

Youth Choir :  Mondays, K-2 Children’s Choir is  4 – 5 pm  for ages 5 through 7 years; Regular Youth Choir is 5-6 pm  for 8 to 15 years of ages; Audition choir for 9 yrs.  and up will start in January.  Children learn vocal and memorization techniques and get to experience the fun of singing together and doing simple choreography, develop a stage presence and have solo opportunities.   Instructor is Janni Richards.  Classes go through December 14.  Cost is $55 for 14 weeks or $20 per month, with a $5 dollar discount for registration on or before Sept. 4.

Elementary Theater School: Tuesdays, 4 to 5 pm for first through fifth graders. Sept. 15 through Nov. 3, with a performance on Nov.11.  Learn acting techniques including vocal projection, auditioning, end-of-class presentation. Instructor is Bonnie Richardson.  Cost is $30.

Basic Youth Drawing: Tuesdays 4 to 5 pm for grades 3 through 8. Sept. 15 through Nov. 3.  Learn and practice drawing skills and techniques. Instructor is Brad Williams. Cost is $35 and includes supplies.

Intermediate Theater School: Thursdays 4-5 pm.  For students grades 6 to 8, Sept. 17 through Nov. 5 with performance on Nov. 13.   Learn acting techniques including vocal projection, audition skills, memorization techniques, stage blocking with theater games and an end-of-class presentation.  Instructor is Barbara Dawson. Cost is $35.

Youth Arts and Crafts Class: Thursdays 4-5 pm.  For grades 1 to 5, Sept. 17  through Nov. 5.   Learn art techniques and skills while using a variety of media for weekly take home art projects.  Instructor is Verlyn King. Cost is $30 and includes materials.

Theatre Workshop: Thursday, 6:30 to 8:30 pm., and some Saturdays for students in grades 9 through 12.  Sept. 17 through Dec. 14, under the direction of Ann Bailey.  Develop acting skills, learn different aspects of theater, put on a community theater production the second weekend in December.  Class fee is $40.  Check website for finalized details.

ADULT/EVENING CLASSES:

Intermediate Watercolor: Tuesday evenings 7 to 9 pm. for 6 weeks. Sept. 15 to Oct. 27 (skip Oct 13)  Learn advanced techniques, get individualized help to complete a final picture.   Instructor is Iantha Folkman.  Class fee is $40.

 

Beginning Watercolor: Weds. for six weeks , 7 to 8:30 pm.  Starts September 16.  Learn the fun, and variety of expression possible with watercolor. Classes included recommended materials, color mixing, and many basic water color techniques. Nicole Oksness is instructor. Class fee is $40.

Basic Photography:  Thursdays 6:30 to 8 pm. for 5 weeks. Amber Rust of Two Color Photography is instructor. Starts Sept. 17^th. Class fee is $30.

Series To Restart In October

Music in the City will continue on the third Friday of the month October through March with some awesome musician. We are also partnering with Beehive Pizza to continue discounts on after show dessert.  See 2009 concerts below.  More information on our website.  Tickets will be $8 per person.

Red Desert Ramblers:  This outstanding 5 person group plays blue grass, old country and swing music, taking traditional harmonies and adding smoking instrumental breaks. Members include Steve Hewson on guitar and mandolin and providing lead vocals,  David Bates on Bass,  Joe Farmer on guitar and mandolin, Sharon Mitchell on Hammered Dulcimer, and Rick Martinez on 5 string banjo.

Emily Hope Price: Emily is an accomplished singer, songwriter, composer, and classically trained cellist. Her live shows are intense with a unique strain of melancholy, silliness, or the occasional bleeding heart. She is driven by the intensity and improvisational nature of the live performance and consistently works to stretch her musical vocabulary. Many of her compo-sitions employ various kinds of musical experi-mentation. Emily received a master's degree in Cello Performance from Carnegie Mellon University and currently lives in Brooklyn, New York where she is frequently seen performing her solo work or as part of a folk trio, “Pearl and the Beard.”  She started her education at Utah State University and we are thrilled to have someone of her caliber coming back to perform for us here in Northern Utah.

Ongoing activities

At the Fine Arts Center

WORLD OF PUPPETRY MUSEUM:   Our World of Puppetry Museum is open the first and third Saturday of each month from 2 to 5 p.m. and by appointment.  Open Museum Day activities include puppet history tours, demonstrations, puppet making and puppet play. 

 A “Punch & Judy” show is presented at 3 p.m. and other puppet storytelling at 4 pm*.  Admission is free, but donations are accepted.  An additional show and activity is planned for Statewide Museum Day, September 26^th.

 

PUPPET STORY TIME: Puppet story times begins

on September 11^th and will again be held on the 2nd Friday of the month during the school year downstairs at the Fine Arts Center.  This is geared to 3 to 5 year olds accompanied by an adult, and includes a craft activity.  Siblings are welcome. Suggested donation of $1 per child for craft.

 

OPEN MIKE NIGHT:  Open Mike is held once a month on Saturdays. The public is invited to enjoy a fun variety of talent. Those wishing to sign up to perform can do so starting at 7 p.m. when the doors open.  This is a great venue for vocalists, pianists, poets, comedians and ensembles to try out new material and experience audience feedback. There is no admission fee for performers, and only $2 suggested donation for audience.  Performers may also have their original works recorded on CD. Light refreshments served.

Fall 2009 Open Mike dates are scheduled for:

 Sept 19^th,   Oct 17^th,   Nov 14^th, and Dec 5^th

 

STORY-TELLING GROUP:  This group has met Wednesday evenings 4 to 5 times a year. Contact the Fine Arts Center to be on group e-mail list for meeting times. One of our goals is to hold a workshop on how to teach storytelling to youth and families.   We are also looking forward to a lot of Halloween telling. Call the Fine Arts Center or Michele Schumann at BC library 723-5850 for information about individual tellers also available to tell tales for your youth meetings and parties.
